William L. Darnall

Captain William Loyd Darnall was a commissioned dental officer in the US Navy who served during World War I, the interbellum period, as well as the beginning of World War II.

His distinguished naval career included assignments in China and Philippines during World War I, dental surgeon on board the USS Lexington (1928 - 1930), as well as at the Naval Hospitals Parris Island, SC and San Diego, CA.

Furthermore, CAPT Darnall’s career included dental education assignments at the Naval Dental School in Washington, DC where he demonstrated outstanding teaching capabilities. From 1939 to 1941 - Dr. Darnall served as Dental Officer in Command, Dental Department, Naval Medical Center, Washington, DC.

Throughout his career CAPT Darnall worked tirelessly to improve the educational facilities of all departments within the Naval Dental Corps utilizing the newest ideas and innovations in the field, which ultimately resulted in the reorganization of the three departments (clinical, teaching, and research) of the Naval Dental School into a coordinated functional unit.
