Walter Reed Adult Outpatient Behavioral Health (AOBH)

  • Description:  Outpatient behavioral health services for therapy and medication management. Includes personal, family and marital therapy.
  • Documentation in EHR? Yes
  • How to engage in service:  You can self-refer for care. If you are in crisis, you can walk in for an acute triage appointment. Your PCM can also place a referral.

Integrative Health and Wellness Service, Internal Medicine

  • Description:  Short term therapy options that focus on building on existing strengths, can utilize modalities such as mindfulness and meditation.
  • Documentation in EHR? Yes
  • How to engage in service:  Self-referral
  • Point of Contact:  Call IHWS at 301-295-0105 to make an appointment.

Doctor On Demand

  • Description:  Long and short term virtual only therapy and pharmacotherapy options through a smartphone app or computer. Urgent care 24/7 for symptoms and conditions that include “stress” and other behavioral health services.
  • Documentation in EHR? Yes/No Requires referral from Primary Care which is documented in EHR.
  • How to engage in service:  Download the app on your smartphone and make an account. For insurance, choose TRICARE East and use the “Benefits Number” on the back of your CAC.
  • Point of Contact:  Requires a referral from your Primary Care:
    • Schedule an appointment with your primary care to request referral.

Telemynd

  • Description:  Long and short term virtual only therapy and pharmacotherapy options through a smartphone app or computer. Urgent care 24/7 for symptoms and conditions that include “stress” and other behavioral health services.
  • Documentation in EHR? Yes/No Requires referral from Primary Care which is documented in EHR. 
  • How to engage in service:  Call number listed or logon to website and complete mental health questionnaire. For insurance, choose TRICARE East and use the “Benefits Number” on the back of your CAC.
  • Point of Contact:  Requires a referral from your Primary Care:
    • Schedule an appointment with your primary care to request referral.
    • Request a referral through the patient portal.

Vet Center

  • Description:  Available across the country with several nearby locations including Silver Spring. They see veterans and active duty, and provide full privacy including notes won’t show up in the VA health system.
  • Documentation in EHR? Yes but kept locally at the Vet Center- Will not show up in the DoD or VA EHR!

Chaplain Services

  • Description:  Individual support for times of stress. Have absolute confidentiality!

  • How to engage in service:  Available via walk in (0730-1600 Bldg 8, 1st floor)

Military One Source

  • Description:  Civilian providers who provide free short-term therapy (typically up to 12 sessions) for active duty members and their families. This is potentially an option for marital/family therapy.

GME Peer Support Program

  • Description:  A peer support program that can help support you through an adverse event or difficult patient experience.

Crisis Text Line

  • Description:  A confidential free texting hotline with trained crisis counselor who can help you problem solve your crisis.

  • Point of Contact:  Text the word HOME to 741-741

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

  • Description:  The Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones, and best practices for professionals.

Given an Hour- Military

  • Description:  Provides free mental health counseling and education by volunteer providers.
  • Documentation in EHR? No
  • How to engage in service:  Complete the online form
  • Point of Contact:  Go to https://giveanhour.org/stayintouch/ and complete the form. Select “Military/Veteran” for the referring program and complete the form. There are options for video and in-person.

Military and Family Life Counselors (MFLC)

  • Description:  Provides counseling to military and family members.

Military and Family Support Center

  • Description:  Professional therapists provide individual, family, marital and group counseling. Crisis counseling and support groups also are available. This service is free and confidential.

Physician Support Line

  • Description:  A dedicated physician/medical student only support line that is staffed by volunteer psychiatrists. They offer multiple therapies including motivational interviewing, supportive therapy, collaborative problem solving, and cognitive behavioral techniques to manage acute stress, panic, depression, and insomnia. We also can help you start processing stressors including existing mental health disorders, substance use disorders, family dynamics, childhood or current trauma, grief and loss, and chronic illness. This service is for peer support and not formal treatment.

A NOTE ON CONFIDENTIALITY and ACCESS

All of the above services are confidential with some active-duty exceptions. You can and should always seek care in times of crisis; we are here for you! Programs are required to allow you to go to doctor’s appointments. Let leadership know if you come across any barriers to care.

If you are suicidal, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. If you disclose being suicidal to any of the above, except for chaplains, they are obligated to break confidentiality to try to get you help.
