Academic Research: Data Management Plan

Academic Research

This pilot guide lists starting information on writing the DoD data management plan, DoD DHA data sharing plan, data protection and ethics, and data citing.  Note. The guide is under construction.

 Research Data

Research data is defined as the recorded factual material commonly accepted in the scientific community as necessary to validate research findings, but not any of the following: preliminary analyses, drafts of scientific papers, plans for future research, peer reviews, or communications with colleagues. This 'recorded' material excludes physical objects (e.g., laboratory samples).

                                 2 CFR 200.315 (e), continuing the definition from 2 CFR 215 (OMB Circular A-110)

 Data Management Plan

Data Management Plan (DMP) is a formal document that describes the research data obtained during the intramural and extramural research, intellectual property rights, policies for access and sharing of the research data, policies for re-use, redistribution, derivatives, and plans for archiving and preservation of research data.

DoD Data Management Plan (DMP) is required for each new research activity

  • Is a part of the research project and/or grant proposal
  • Includes the description of anticipated publicly releasable and limited data sets and plans for retention and access
  • DMP should be submitted to DTIC at the beginning of the research project
  • Preservation data sets are evaluated by subject matter expert within the discipline
  • Excluded data from public release are national security, economic security, export control, proprietary information, personally identifiable information, and economic cost/benefit
